i-CANADA Executives Set Up Liaison with Federal Industry Minister
Industry Ministry and i-CANADA Governors follow through on meeting with Minister Moore to catalyze “New National Dream”: an Intelligent Nation
Following a meeting between Government of Canada Industry Minister James Moore and an i-CANADA Governors Council delegation of 30 leaders of major corporations, mayors and opinion-leaders, a Working Group process has been set up to regularize ongoing synergy between the two groups. Two meetings between Government and representatives have already occurred.
The goal of the i-CANADA Governors’ drive is to create a nation of “Intelligent Communities”. Intelligent Communities are those that use the latest digital technologies to transform and connect all sectors and related smart applications into a consensual vision and strategy for sustainable prosperity.
“An Industry Canada Director General has been assigned to act as a conduit from the Minister’s office to our Governors,” said i-CANADA Chair and Co-Founder Bill Hutchison. “We will be directly involving our Governors in relevant meetings as we move forward.”
Minister Moore drew attention to the Harper Government’s commitment to a connected, digital Canada and noted that i-CANADA has a vision closely aligned with one of the Government’s key goals: to position Canada for long-term success and prosperity in the digital era. He said he looked forward to further discussions with i-CANADA in support of shared priorities for Canada’s digital future and he offered i-CANADA the use of his boardroom for future i-Canada meetings in Ottawa.
In addition to the Minister, the Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Communities, Peter Braid, attended the meeting; ongoing conversations are planned to keep both government departments apprised of possible opportunities for collaboration with i-CANADA
“This is an arena where Canada can win,” stated Brenda Halloran, former Mayor of Waterloo and co-Chair of the meeting with the Minister. “This year Toronto was named 2014 Intelligent Community of the Year by the Intelligent Community Forum of New York. Canada has historically been a leader in this area, with 20 Canadian cities having been recognized globally in the past 15 years. We look forward to cooperating with the Industry Ministry to advance the actions that will create even more leverage for Canada.”
i-CANADA is a not-for-profit organization led by a Governors Council of 60 of Canada’s CEO’s, Mayors and opinion-leaders who are our leaders in digital transformation. They champion the benefits and the necessary social effort of creating more world-leading Intelligent Communities. For more information on i-CANADA please go to: http://icanada150.ca/
